Inside an English Countryside-Inspired Boy’s Room

Stepping into this charming boy’s room by @meander.home feels like stepping into a quiet corner of the English countryside.

The home itself dates back to the 1800s, though this particular room was added shortly after the turn of the century. After moving back to the United States from Sussex, the goal was to recreate the warmth and character of an English cottage nursery — a space that feels timeless, layered, and full of story.

The room was thoughtfully restored from the ground up. The original floors were refinished to highlight their age and character, while the trim and built-ins were painted in Oval Room Blue by Farrow & Ball, a soft heritage blue that anchors the space and brings a calm, collected feeling to the room.

The wallpaper sets the tone immediately. “The House That Jack Built” in Parchment & Cream by C.F.A. Voysey wraps the walls in a delicate countryside narrative filled with animals, trees, cottages, and storybook details. The pattern feels both whimsical and historic — perfectly suited to a child’s space while honoring the age of the home.

At the center of the room sits a beautiful antique pine bed sourced from England, a piece collected while the family was living overseas. Its warm wood tones bring depth and authenticity to the room, grounding the softer elements and reinforcing the cottage aesthetic.

Throughout the space, thoughtful details bring personality and playfulness. Wooden toys, woven baskets, children’s books, and heirloom-style objects sit neatly within the built-ins painted in Oval Room Blue. A small play kitchen and vintage desk create areas for imagination and creativity, while plush animals and simple textiles keep the room feeling cozy and welcoming.

The result is a room that feels both nostalgic and lived-in — a quiet little world where childhood unfolds slowly among books, toys, and the gentle charm of countryside design.
